Disadur dari sebuah cerpen berjudul In Another Country karangan David Constantine, 45 Years
bercerita tentang pasang surut kehidupan rumah tangga Geoff (Tom
Courtenay) dan Kate Mercer (Charlotte Rampling). Berawal ketika pasangan
yang tengah menikmati masa-masa pensiun mereka dengan tenang di sebuah
pedesaan, di wilayah timur Inggris tersebut, hendak mempersiapkan
perayaan ulang tahun pernikahan mereka yang ke-45 tahun. Namun seminggu
sebelum hari perayaan tersebut datang, tiba-tiba sang suami dikirimi
sepucuk surat yang isinya memberitahukan bahwa jenazah seorang wanita
bernama Katya, telah ditemukan dalam bongkahan es yang mencair di
pegunungan alpen, Swiss. Belakangan diketahui, ternyata Katya merupakan
cinta pertama Geoff yang secara tragis terpeleset jatuh kedalam sebuah
celah gletser yang sangat dalam, saat mendaki gunung bersamanya Lima
puluh tahun silam. Surat itu pun lantas memercikan pergolakan batin yang
membuat hubungan suami istri yang semula harmonis itu, menjadi
renggang. Di satu sisi, Geoff yang sempat mengutarakan niat nya untuk
pergi ke ke Swiss guna memastikan kebenaran informasi yang ia terima,
mulai terbuai akan kenangannya dulu bersama katya yang masih tersisa
dalam memorinya. Ia lalu membayangkan wajah Katya yang kini mungkin
masih terlihat muda setelah lima dekade berlalu, karena terawetkan oleh
es. Sementara kate yang mulai meragukan cinta Geoff terhadapnya,
berusaha tetap fokus dalam merencanakan pesta pernikahannya, dengan
mulai mereservasi gedung dan lain hal. Tetapi apa daya, keadaan semakin
memburuk terlebih ketika suatu malam Geoff kedapatan sedang mencari foto
Katya yang ia sembunyikan di loteng rumah. Hingga kemudian Kate, yang
menaruh rasa curiga pada suaminya, menemukan sebuah fakta yang
mengejutkan tentang Geoff dan masa lalunya.
